In days of yore public notices used to be just that, Here are three of Kirkwall's forgotten billboards.
I'm sure there used to be more, and have a nagging feeling there used to be one on the Back Road.
Anybody know anything more about these things. I'll let others say where these are.

Brilliant! I mind when I was young (twa three year ago), at general election time, these boards used to be slestered wi' posters o' Jo Grimond. Then, miraculously, overnight, someone would paste posters o' his rivals ower the top o' them.

For billboard spotters, from the top they are
- on Palace Road on the wall of what used to be the tennis court
- on Laing Street next to the former Robertson's machinery dealers
- on Victoria Street betweem the former Brethren and former Edie Chalmers'.
Paul, on the picture you link to, is the board where the opening now is up the back of the former Orcadian offices?

Reminds me of notices I used to see in London on walls prone to flyposting: BILL STICKERS WILL BE PROSECUTED. Home-made posters would appear overnight saying 'Bill Stickers is INNOCENT!', 'Free Bill NOW!!' etc. Warnings need careful wording if they're not to provoke the very thing they're trying to prevent. Envelopes marked PHOTOGRAPHS DO NOT BEND would arrive doubled-up through the letterbox with a handwritten OH YES THEY DO! added . The current polite PLEASE DO NOT BEND seems to have made a difference. (A determined postperson could still write 'Why? Something wrong with my backside?', but without the added impact of a bunch of ruined snaps what would be the point?)

Am I young enough to remember a poster for Jo Grimond saying 'If you've time to spare, go by air'?
Or is that a figment of my imagination?
