I was sitting in an enclosed area of the garden earlier and a huge dragonfly caught my eye, an ENORMOUS insect - I've never seen the like in Orkney - a noise like a helicopter, looked like a helicopter going round and round and as it got closer it looked even more huge! So then I freaked out as I thought it might eat me!

Kenneth, your insects are damselflies. Some damselfly species live and breed in Orkney, but I doubt if even a specialist (odonatist) would be prepared to make a positive identification from your photo alone. Their bodies look reddish in colour in this image, but the whole pic has a red cast; how did they look to your naked eye?
