Another view of de Havilland DEH84 Dragon at Kirkwall Airport

Nice photo of an old Dragon a later version with spatted undercarriage. Take a look at my picture #147 of Fresson's Dragon at Berstane in about 1938, may have been earlier. Exposed undercart. Also my picture #15877 of Iolanthe in flight at an air show at East Fortune a few years ago. I never flew in a DH 84 but had many flights in a DH89 Rapide both in Scotland and East Africa. DH89 was a bit bigger than the DH84 and is distinguished by its tapered wings and fully faired undercarriage. It had Gipsy-Six engines in preference to the DH84's Gipsy Majors, giving it a little more speed. They were bumpy old kites in the best of weathers and absolute pigs when it was rough. The DH89 was replaced by the DeHavilland Dove on the East Africa service between Dar-es-Salaam and Mtwara and was sheer luxury in comparison.
