Further to picture #28756 here is another obviously taken at the same time of Scapa Distillery staff. I've just realised George Cowie is seated at the centre and I wonder if the occasion could have been his retirement.

It wasn't George Cowie's retirement. The opening coincided with the completion of George's 25th year at the distillery. He continued to work from his Brewer's office in the new block for some more years.

Alex Vesco - I just found your comment. Thanks for that - I did wonder why George was centre front.

George (Dod) Cowie was my uncle, married to my auntie “Molly”
(Mary Jane Cromarty). He was a large gentleman with hands like spades who had a very gentle character: a gem of a man who never had a bad word to say about anybody. A very rare breed indeed! (John Cromarty, son of Jock Cromarty, nephew of George Cowie).
