Tom writes:
'I am attaching a photo of a painting of a full rigged clipper ship called LAJU which is a Malay word meaning SWIFT. An Orkney connection? LAJU was built at the behest of my great grandfather Capt. Thomas Douglas Scott of Crantit by Alexander Stephen and Sons, Dundee and launched on Wednesday 28 April 1869. A full account of the ship and the launching was published in the Dundee Advertiser at the time and from time to time other mentions are recorded. For instance, "While on passage Yokohama (Japan) to New York, September 1870, struck by hurricane in South China Seas. Lay seven hours with yard arms in water. Badly damaged. Put in to Hong Kong." It must have been an anxious time for the Captain and his crew of twelve.'
