St Magnus Cathedral

An old postcard - publisher and photographer unknown. The date is a guess. The glass screen separating the nave and the choir was installed in the 1850s. It was replced by the organ screen in the 1920s.

Comments:
This screen replaced an earlier one removed during the Government renovations in the 1840s. They were there to partition off the choir, which after the Reformation had become the only part of the building used for worship. When the full restoration of the building with Sheriff Thoms' money began in 1913, work began in the nave, then the transepts and tower. By 1918 the congregation was able to move into the nave and transepts (and sit in the then new chairs - those now being replaced) while the workmen moved behind the screen to start work in the choir. The work was eventually finished in 1930.
