John, Iolene has confirmed that the teacher is Mary Laird.
She said the boy in the front row is not Reggie Ritch and she cannot help with the children on either side of this boy.

Having recieved information from shall we say more mature members of our Island,
I now have names for the two boys at the front who are Issac Bremner and John Moar.
Sadly Issac was killed in action in Tunisia in 1943.
I am sorry if I have caused offence to any one by my errors, but I do feel that we must remember those who trod our paths in the past especaly the likes of Issac who had such a short life and never came back to his native Island.

The Kirkwall Royal British Legion has a very good web site and Brian Budge has put in so much work on it.
I am sure we could help with some info and photo's from the island of Hoy. The folk with memories from away back then are sadly getting fewer.
This is what it says on the memorial link page.

Teacher, Mary Laird was my first teacher, at North Walls school in 1945, but she was married then to Sandy Inkster, they lived in Oban Cottage, in Crockness.
They had a daughter Muriel.

I was told a short time ago by members of the Rendall family that the last time that Isaac Bremner was in Hoy and visited Rackwick he was afraid and said he did not want to go back as he thought his life was in great danger.
How many poor boys must have felt the same?.
Now our service personnel are being told not to wear ther uniform on the street for fear of being targeted by "Hoodlums".
What the hell was it all for!!.

Thank you so much for this. I know its an old posting but I have only recently began researching my husbands family history. Isaac and Margaret were his great uncle and aunt. My husband is grandson of Isobel (Bella) Bremner. It's fantastic to have found this photo.
