Gospel Hall, Pan Bay Flotta

I took this picture for my Dad. His Grandfather was the preacher at the Gospel Hall. He stayed at Garson Croft, just around the bay and had to walk there every Sunday morning. For a treat they would go across the bay in his yole to save the walk. The wreck of the old boat was there when he was a boy and will be pleased to see that it is still there.

Comments:
A well taken photo of historic items - just what the Image Library should be all about. We have the interesting story about the Gospel Hall, pity we don't know something about the old boat but some things do disappear in the mists of time. Well done Stuart.

Hey, is that hall deserted? It looks abandoned.

The hall has It been like that for years, although it was boarded up when I was a boy.

I used to live at Burnside, just above where that photo is taken when I was at primary school in the late 70's early 80's.

There were a lot more of the ribs and boards of the boat still in place back then.

It would be good to see a photo of what that boat looked like when it was first there.

As well as Pan Hope Pier there is another stone built pier along the shore to the right of where this photo was taken but I don't know the name of it.

The pier to the right was called the new pier and some folk called it the Dam's pier. As kids we spent a lot of time fishing for crabs from this pier using a limpet tied to a bit of string with a weight on it. I think the boat was a drifter bought by Tom and Robert Rosie, possibly for the wood. Someone might correct me on this.
