Queen's visit to Westray - 1960 - photo no 1

Her Majesty the Queen about to alight from John Hume's new school bus outside the Pierowall school playground on 12 August 1960. She had arrived on board the Royal Yacht Britannia via Stronsay and the purpose of the visit was to 'open' the new school buildings. The visit was very brief - scheduled to last from 1640 until 1725 hours. In the foreground is James Mowat from Cleat, holding his son Gavin, to his left is his mother Jean Mowat, and to his right is his wife Elizabeth and her sister Mary. I took this photo from the roof of Gavin Mowat, the watchmaker's shop(the knobbly knee belonged to David Rendall).

Comments:
Wow, when initially looking at the photo, I thought, there's bound to be relatives of mine there and then when I read the description, I was right!! First time I've caught a glimpse of my great grandmother Jean Mowat, nae doubt my nana was named after her. Funnily enough when I was born they wanted to name me Jean too but nana said there was enough Jeans in the family so they settled for Jan. Gavin still stays at Cleat.
