The location is the Gatehouse at the entry to Berstane Lodge, just above Berstane farm. Must have been a popular "photo shoot" in its day as I have photos of W R Tullock and his family taken at the same location.

The gateway to Berstane House, perhaps? Sheriff Brown lived there between the wars. He was Sheriff-substitute at Kirkwall from 1926 to 1946 I think, with a break in 1932/3 when he went to Dingwall. He listed "motoring" as one of his recreations in a Scottish Who's Who of the time. Not long ago a report from the Orcadian describing how he was met at Scapa on his return by various friends all in their cars, and how they formed a convoy to accompany him home, was reprinted somewhere, but I can't remember where ("From our Files" maybe?). I don't know if he is in this photo or not, though I'm sure I've seen a photo of him somewhere. Maybe it was of the opening of Wideford airfield. I've a feeling he wore a monocle.

This is a Tom Kent photograph and the caption reads "Tullock family group at Berstane, St. Ola".
