Just browsing through this site loking for clues about my orkney ancestors when I spotted the name Budge. People of that name were neighbours of my ancestors, Loutit and latterly Spence who lived at Crootaing. Visited in May this year and found the house. have also joined the Orkney FHS

Hello Lin.
My name Budge came from Caithness only by my Father who came to Hoy in 1937, I believe all of the Budge's in Orkney at one time or another came across the Pentland Firth. I am told that the seat (If that is what the stronghold is known as) was a place called "Toftingall" in Caithness, others smarter than I will be able to relate more of our past history.
I have also been told that the Budges changed there name from Mcdonald as they did not wish to fight for that Clan!!, Not a thing to boast about!! Anyway we have survived and I would rather back of than fight so maybe its a strong gene we have still got!!!.
It is most likely your ancestors came from South Ronaldsay. We do have a Crowtaing here in "Waas" we call it "Crootin" but this is not an uncomman place name in the isles.

Hi all, I've just been reading through the site. Very interested to see if anyone can help. My gran was Barbara Budge Thomson, born 1926. Her mother was Alice Thomson. Alice had several brothers who I believe were fishermen. I remember my gran telling me of Barbara Budge possibly originally from Caithness. I've been trying to connect the two for ages and draw a blank. Would be delighted to hear any info at all
