1935 is correct Willie, September in fact, though it happened at Trumland and not Westness. The plane, piloted by John Rae, and carrying five passengers, came down on its approach to Trumland airfield in Rousay, careering through trees and ending up against the wall. The pilot's head went through the cockpit windscreen and the passengers thrown from their seats, although all escaped with minor cuts and bruises. [Info from The Orcadian Book of the 20th Century]

The plane crashed into the high walled garden at WESTNESS HOUSE. the first on the scene was Harry Marwick and John Craigie. The pilot said that they hit an air pocket and lost hight. The plane had its wings, etc taken off and was shipped to Kirkwall on Tom Sinclairs boats. The folk in Kirkwall lined all around the basin to watch the plane parts offloaded on the corn slip.

Most certainly Westness House - confirmed by present owners of that property.

I think this is a Dragon, not a Rapide.
