Comments:
When all these works were being carried oot jist afore the war and in the early time o hostilities hid must hiv been a bonanza for the building industry, as I am led tae understand no tendering was done only a bill for tonnage and labour was issued to the War Dept and payment was made. Our uncle George worked for a firm called "Hippersons" here on Hoy putting in the Anti Aircraft Guns, George said they put 30 tons o cement plus the aggregate under each gun!!they werna tae go anywhere. Later George saw action in North Africa and other places (He was 6ft 6in and in the Scots Guards) and lived the rest of his life wae shrapnell in his lungs and in his back. Wae hiv been so lucky in our generation never to have seen war.
