IRENE?
This is a photo of me taken in 1974 (I am sorry about the trousers but judging by the other person in the photo they may have been popular at the time!). Anyway I think this may be the IRENE - can anyone confirm? All I know for definite is that the photo was taken in Orkney in 1974.
[No, the Irene was far bigger- see picture #2060, picture #2061 and picture #2231 for evidence- Steven]

I would say that this is the Norwegian fishing vessel NORHOLMEN.

This is the Norwegian fishing vessel " Norholmen" which grounded on the Kirk Rocks in Hoy Sound in 1966 ( I think). She was later driven over the rocks and lay for a few years right under the Warbeth Churchyard.

Looks like the Norwegian fishing boat "Norholmen" which was wrecked near the mouth of Hoy Sound.

Wreck of the 'Norholmen'? cf picture #2709 where there's a lot of background information.

Isn't this the Norholmen at Warbeth.I think the other fellow is trying to refloat her by the look of it.

Don't know the name of the vessel but I'm sure it is below the Stromness cemetery. I think it went ashore in the late 60s

This wreck is right below the cemetary at Warbeth Beach, Stromness. The story at the time was that she first touched bottom on Hoy and the crew then beached it at the Warbeth side. The first anyone new that something had happened is when the crew walked into Stromness at dawn. It was rumoured that the whole episode was for an insurance claim and the skipper lost his life trying a repeat incident somewhere on the West Coast of Scotland. I had a crane on hire to the salvage team removing the valuable parts including the engine and they gave me the wheel from the wheelhouse which I still have at home. I cannot remember the boat's name but if anyone could contact Cecil Muir who was the crane driver at the time he may be able to give the name.

Possibly the Norwegian trawler Norholmen which was wrecked on the Kirk Rocks in November 1966. She eventually drove ashore below the Stromness Kirkyard and was broken up for scrap.

There was a trawler aground out at the point of Carness overlooking the string. We used to go out and play on her.

Could this be the remains of the fv Norholmen which ended her days below the kirkyard at Warbeth, Stromness.Looks like the wall around the graveyard at the top left o the picture.

that the wreck that was at the kirk yard in stromness,
Added by Ootanaboot on 06 March 2010
Looks like it could be on the West Shore at Stromness.
It looks like grave stones above the top of the wall which could make it Warbeth Cemetery. THat was quite a common place for trawlers to end up and it looks like a net drum at the stern.

Surprised to see that "she" is still leaking water after such a long time on the rocks!

I don't know if anyone else agrees but is the man in the background doing what I think he is doing?
I guess TK thinks the same.
A first on Orkneycommunities, if he is!
[Now that you mention it... I had assumed that he was miming holding up the boat! - Steven]

There's a wee bit of it left, all rusted

Hi Morag
We went back down the next day and found parts of it scattered around. Got some nice photos before we had to leave Orkney. Touched the wreck as a kid so its bit surprising to find so little of it left.
