Mystery boat

May 1951 Germany to Halifax.

[Janice has been a bit economical with her caption, so I am guessing this might be the boat that was damaged en-route to the New World and had to put into Lyness for repairs. That right? - Steven]

Looks a lot like the ANNA SALEN.

If you're right, Steven, I was labouring at the then new Hoymansquoy housing site (earning a bob or two in my student vacation) at the time. A couple of joiners were pulled off the site to help with the ship's temporary repairs. In the 'Cosmo' that weekend I danced with one of the ship's passengers - a Canadian swimming international. Plain, with acne. And the girl wasn't that great-looking either. Can't recall the ship's name.

My last comment was based on the year given: 1951. It's wrong. The ship is the Anna Salen and the year was 1952. (Details of her collision are elsewhere on this website.) My dance partner was a Canadian Olympic swimmer; I thought at first she couldn't have been because 1951 wasn't an Olympic year. Otherwise my comment was correct.

I agree with Allan. Look at picture #7872, picture #20173 and picture #20172. I'll send in another one if I can!

Janice, if you're still checking this site every once in a while, could you tell me where this picture was taken? I'm guessing Bremerhaven?

I am so pleased to see some information on the Anna Salen. My parents came to Canada (Halifax) on this ship, landed Dec 31, 1951.
I am trying to gather more information. I wonder if Bremerhaven is where they left from. Thank you for any research tips / information anyone can provide.
