Great to see this and to have names supplied, can anyone tell me when the first or last ploughing match was held. Herbert Mackenzie

According to Jim Reid,of Mission , B.C., Canada, writing in the year 2000, he said that there were several matches held on the sand at Mill Bay. The first was in 1926 and there were matches in 1927 & 28.... His brother Pat competed in 1926 & 1927 first with a home made plough & then he had a blacksmith made one. Herbert Mackenzie

According to my Aunt Nana Peace who is now 89, the first match was in 1928 and won by her brother Willie. He was give a white china egg-cup covered in silver paper. The following year 1929, it was won by John Fotheringhame, and by then a proper "Stronsay Juvenile Ploughing Cup" was purchased and engraved with the winner's name. In 1930 it was won by Jim Moodie, and in 1931, by Jim Work. I believe the following years it was won by Doy Stout, but there was a wee bit of a fall out over something, and the cup remained with Jim Work. Recently, his brother-in-law, Ivan Hourston from Shapinsay sent it to me to be put in the Stronsay Fish Mart Interpretation Centre. I haven't got around to doing this yet, but will soon.
