This is Kirkwall a very long time ago,and the date is just a guess.
Could this be a "T.K." or a "G.W.W." ??
Note there is no PIckaquoy Road, and very few buildings beyond that or on Wideford Hill. The buildings up and slightly left of centre, could that be Muddisdale ?

Kirkwall Town Hall
It's a G.W.W. (George Washington Wilson) and has been published in a book of his views of Orkney and Shetland taken from the University of Aberdeen Photographic Archive (their website's well worth a look). Neither book nor website dates it, but there are a number of clues. In the centre of the picture, with a square tower, is the old Free Kirk, replaced by what is now "the King Street Halls" in the 1890s. Over to the left the Grammar School is minus its first extension of 1890. But best of all, if you look closely you can just see that the Town Hall roof has not been put on yet. The Town Hall was built between 1884 and 1886.
