Taken about the same time as picture #1683. This is taken from the remains of Garden's building, looking west across Bridge Street. The intensity of the heat from the fire can be best illustrated by the broken windows and the scorching of the face of John Scott's shop opposite, the roof of which was alight at one point during the blaze.

How did the fire start?

Don't know Barbara. Asked mother but no joy there I'm afraid. Would your mum know?

My late mother, Peggy Rendall (Anderson) told me a while ago that she remembered the night of the fire and that they were wakened by folk telling them to get out of their house in Garden Street(Now St Catherine's Place) as they thought the whole place was going to go up in flames. She also remembered hearing all the glass and everything exploding with the heat. I wish now I'd paid more attention to what she was telling me!!
