This is the way the cemetery in Pierowall looked when I visited in 1988. Some of the graves of my own family were sunk well into the ground and seemed like passages to the underworld. By my second visit in 2003, the cemetery had been groomed and shorn of its tall grasses, and I felt a peculiar loss.
