After extensive investigation I believe I have found the source of Shearer's pelmets as featured in picture #1478 and picture #1481.
In this photo of Kirkwall's new chain store the pelmets can be clearly seen top left hand side.

At the top left of the ventilator cowl on the ceiling was one of a number of Emergency lights which I was told (as an inquisitive wee boy) were gas powered.

Those traditional Gas-Operated Emergency Lights, along with the Pink and Grey Checked pattern flooring brings back memories of Woolies in bygone days - where everything was once 3d or 6d!

The Manager was the first one in Woolies and his
name was Mr Walker (no relation)he was single and
stayed in the Royal Hotel, DG spence was the owner all the time he was here.

I think his name was Angus Walker, and he was quite an accomplished pianist.
