Sinclairs Supply Stores

Date only approx.
Picture added on 15 July 2007
Comments:
Probably later than that I'd guess Edwin. The car on the far right looks like a Vauxhall Viva HC which was first produced in 1970.

Hmmm! Not sure about the date, but I think it is earlier than 1970. The huts that can be seen above the white Volkswagon Beetle were torn down, the ground levelled, concreted, and used as a 'showroom' and parking area for large and small caravans sold by Kenny Firth, the owner of the Blue Star Garage at the time. The blue building known as Sinclair's Supply Stores is now a private house, and the land that was used to park and show caravans was bought by the Orkney Housing Association and is now the Greenvoe housing scheme.

is this store related to the shop run by the sinclairs sisters in finstown 1920
Added by Norma Clouston on 01 May 2010
That I'm not sure of. Sinclair's Supply Stores in Stromness was owned and operated by brothers David and Robert(Bobby)Sinclair. David Sinclair passed away about 2 years ago and he was in his eighties, so 1920 would have been very near his year of birth. The sisters in Finstown could have been related to his father but that would need to be verified.

I remember my grandmother telling me that we had relations in Orkney, (I've since found that many ancestors that it beggars belief), She spoke of one who had a grocers shop in Stromness and used to send eggs down to her in Edinburgh during WW2.
I've since discovered that a Robert Sinclair married a Jessie Hardie in Edinburgh in 1922. Robert died in 1939 in Stromness. I'm not sure about Jessie. Would anyone know if the Robert mentioned in Skaraman's post was connected. I'd be interested to know.

I've just seen this. Robert and David were sons of Jessie Hardie and Robert Sinclair. Robert was my father and died in 1996.

Am I correct then in thinking that they are descended from Robert and Ann Mathieson from Mid Rinigill on Hoy?

I wonder if Maureen Sinclair who posted on 27 January 2014 would care to contact me at [email protected]
Many thanks
