Kirkwall from the air, 1955

Taken on 3rd December 1955.

New housing appearing on the south side, the Kiln Corner the way it was, and Shore Street very different at the oil depot.

Comments:
"St Ninian" on east side of Pier, "St Clement" at Coopers store and "Earl Thorfinn" (possibly Sigurd but I favour Thorfinn due to being slightly larger and varnished wheelhouse) in front of "Orkney Steam" store. Minimal housing on Berstane Road and only Papdale Infant School then.
Part of Jolly's Coal Store and old cattle lairage, opposite Bill Reid's store were removed to allow 2 way traffic from st Catherine's Place to Shore Street in the 60s.
