The Bonxies (Great Skuas) are from slides shot near Ness, Stromness in August 1982 (L) & on Hoy in July 1978 (R). The lower pics show a young, flightless Greater Black-backed Gull mauled by Bonxies, and one they ate earlier, near the Loch of Stourdale, Hoy, August 1973. (I put the 'scorie' out of its misery.) The top (R) shot clearly shows the feature that makes the Bonxie such an effective predator: the needle-sharp hook on its beak.
