I could be wrong but would a hare be a bit more brown in colour?

Rabbit! Brown Hares have longer ears with blacker tips, large yellow, slightly mad-looking eyes, and brighter body colour. They are also about half as big again as the average rabbit. You'll probably see plenty of hares soon as they start their 'mad March' courting behaviour, often in the middle of open fields.
