Kirkwall over the Duckie Pond 1/2

Picture taken at a guess, early 1900s, one of two pictures, looking down from Papdale Area on to the snowed over Duckie Pond. Pre.Town Council housing scheme of White St.,Slater St.,Thoms St.,etc. Interesting trying to pick out the buildings, short spire on the Cathedral. There is nothing on the back or front of the photo to say when or who took it. Could be a print off a Tom Kent picture. More to say about the two-storey house in picture no.2. Added by Phil Brough

Comments:
This is indeed a Tom Kent photograph. I have a large framed copy, inscribed in the lower right corner to be 'Kirkwall in Winter - TK', but no date.

If you look at the building behind the fence post on the left hand side of the picture, I am almost sure that this will be the building we used to call the Watter Hoose. It had to supply pumped water to part of Kirkwall.

If you go down Slater Street on the right side, and turn the corner going to Garrioch Street, this building would be immediately on the opposite side of the road.

The lone building almost in the centre of the picture I am sure must be at the foot of White Street/ Willow Road. I think the name is (or was) Willow Cottage.

The same photo can be found on page 205 of "The Orkney Book", published 1909.
