My Home. 1954
This was where I lived for ten years. It was the first Kirkwall & St Ola Community Centre at that time. My father, Eric Windwick, was the caretaker. The buildings had previously been a WWII Toc H. It became the first Kirkwall Royal British Legion Club in June 1962. It was situated on Great Western Road – near to where the Fire Station is now.

I remember Sandy Wylie living in there. It was also the office for the Rural Cinema when I was an operator. The small reels of film that arrived by post were joined together onto a large reel which gave a continuous 2 hour show.

Alright except in Longhope when my auntie's man Jimmy Wilson would sometimes put it in the wrong way and the film went backwards. What a laugh we would have and some right glares from auntie Dolly who seemed to try and keep a bit of order by flashing her torch at us young folk. Donald banging his crisp poke was an awful sin!

Your tales of the pictures in the YM Beryl, dae you mind the time the late Freddie Tait stopped the show!! I was sat behind Freddie on that night, noo poor Freddie could not behave himsell he wiz a peeedie bu**er, I watched him winding the speaker cable which ran up the hall around and around his feet, when he got all the slack in he gave a mighty kick and the loud speaker fell tae the floor and total silence ensued!!!!.
Jimmy Wilson put on the full hoose lights came doon the the hall battered poor Freddie aboot the lugs and booted him oot the door, I dont think he was back at a film show iver again!!.
Freddie was a likable lad but jist couldna behave himsel.

No I don't mind on that night but I remember how Freddie got blamed for things that happened on the island back then whether it was him or no. He was a chap who lost his mum as a young boy and I'm sure he just missed her guidance for as you say he was a likeable guy.
