Inside Wee Fea

Taken on the Council trip to Lyness alluded to by John Budge the other day. It was quite dark (i.e. pitch black) inside, so still photos were not that successful, although movie mode gives a good idea of what it is like in there.

I remember that place fine, it used to have a series of blast walls protruding from each side and overlapping in the middle in the main tunnels. Remember the powers that be of the seventies thinking it would be a good idea to knock these things down. Remember spending weeks in there giving it lalldy with sledge hammers and we won in the end- think they were about three feet thick. There was a new generator up there so we did have lights but the bulbs must have been about 15 watt because visibility wisna great LOL

My father Walter Ross worked in the building of the tunnel. He was gassed once and had a bike accident on the way home as a result. No Health & Safety in those days.
