This is in Kirkwall. I know it is a bolt but where is it, and what is it doing? Picture taken this morning 15th April 2011.

It's attached to the steel brace that is holding up the big tree in Albert St?

It might be helping to hold the Big Tree together, but I haven't checked.

Is it a nut waiting for a squirrel?

Is it one of the bolts that holds the poor old Big Tree together?
Added by Ann on 16 April 2011
Remains of a railing, set in lead as was the practice, and more than likely cut away for scrap during the war. Looks as if it was set in sandstone, perhaps the coping stone of an old dyke.

one of the bolts that hold the scaffolding for the "Big Tree"

Yes, this is one of the bolts which go through to the square section steel beam which supports the remains of our Big Tree. The beam is ugly but does the job. A coat of dark paint to the beam would improve matters.
I wonder how much longer this old tree will last?
