I can answer my own question about Owld Dan's age when the replacement of his apparel depended solely on the well-worn red ration-book. John Budge's comment on picture #25028 gives Dan's age as being, in effect, 9 years older than the 20th century. So he would have been 48 - give or take a few months - at the outbreak of WW2.
(Horrible thought - there are probably people out there referring to me as Owld Ian.)
