James Brough

Photo taken during the 1st. World War,1916. My grandfather, James Brough,on the back of the photo is written, the uniform of the Seaforth Highlanders. He was born at 6 Bridge Street, Kirkwall, then later as a young man, married a lady from Dounby. They lived at"Esgar" in Dounby where their family was born. He served his time as a painter and decorator with G.D.Bain, Painters, Broad St. His oldest son James (my father) also became a Painter and I followed on after. Sadly it ended when I retired in 2005. Comments:
Phil men like your grandfather here changed the world forever. When I was a lad there were some men living around my district who like Mr Brough had been to the Hell of war and against the odds survived!! They were straight talking upright men who did not feel they owed society anything nor indeed should they.
Two of my Grand Uncles, one on mothers side and one on our fathers side, died in WW1 and a few years ago I looked up on the war graves site Sargent Donald Thomson Seaforth Highlanders. When I put the name in so many of the same name came up I was left not knowing which one he was so much was the carnage in that bloody war!!.

To a lesser extent after WW2 our parents who had done their bit for King and Country likwwise were not liftan there hat tae anyone who thought they were of a higher standing.

Thank goodness we now live here in Orkney in an almost classless society and it is thanks to men like Mr Brough that brought about that change sooner than later.

Here endeth my thought for today!!.

Just a small correction to the text in the Photo,it should read "Esgar in Birsay".I read John's comments with interest and forgot to mention my Grandfather and Father both survived the 1st and 2nd World Wars. Added by Phil Brough.

Google cwgc.org John then click "Records" and with Ann's info you will see the details and a photo of the cemetery. I found it but can't put a link on this site as links are not allowed.
