Comments:
The uniform looks very like a photo I have of my Grandfather James William Peace (Stronsay parents) who was in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in WW1.
The cap and lapel badges are I think maple leaves.

John Bruce Brough, born in Kirkwall on 15th September 1883, volunteered for the Canadian Expeditionary Force from his job as a grocery clerk in Vancouver on 29th January 1916. John, like James, survived the Great War and is shown in the photo in his Canadian infantry uniform.

Phil, if you go to www.collectionscanada.gc.ca and follow the link "Military and Peacekeeping", then "Soldiers of the First World War", you can search for (and find) a copy of John Brough's Attestation Papers when he joined the CEF. I know about the site because my Kirkwall-born grandfather, George Moodie (June 20, 1890) also served with the CEF. Interestingly, your John Brough and my grandfather both list Bridge Street Lane as the address of their next-of-kin. |Hope you find this link interesting!

Hi Phil,

I have found out quite a bit about Pte. John Bruce Brough. He lost his eye in the war and returned to Vancouver on disability. Feel free to contact me.

Regards,

Morgan

[Hi Morgan - sorry to tell you that Phil died a few years ago, but I've posted your comment in case other members of the family are interested - Steven]
