Looking at the planned route of the access road to the new hostel from Papdale Road yields the above view..
Taking a walk along the path it can be seen that the trees alongside it are generally fairly unimpressive specimens, and walking the route offers reasonable confidence that a 5m wide road could be threaded though with the loss of about ten trees. What does that mean in terms of the number of trees there? Well, a quick count of the trees in the area bounded by the walled garden and Papdale House to the west suggests that there are approximately 140 trees there. This does not include the trees to the south of the walled garden or to the west of Papdale House. So the felling of 10 or even 20 trees does not equate to the wholesale destruction of the Papdale Woods.
