Mystery thing

Mystery thing. Picture taken today. Brooch dates from around a century ago. Belonged to a relative of mine whose initials are engraved on the back. Probably not uncommon in Orkney in its time. Anyone recognise it?

Wisdom and Loyalty, is it a school badge ?
Added by Cadalach on 04 May 2010
I'd have said 'Wisdom and Dutifulness, or Piety', but it's not exactly a school badge. The clue (if it can be called that) is in the 4 letters incorporated into the decoration and the lion rampant.

With the rampant lion and the thistle motifs, this badge is anxious to be recognised as Scottish. The letters E P T C in the corners stand for Edinburgh Provincial Training Centre, the official name of Moray House teacher training college. I presume the badge was awarded to graduates of the college, but I haven't been able to discover anything else about it. Given that many Orkney schoolteachers were Moray House trained, the badge would surely have been 'not uncommon' in Orkney, as I said at the start. This one is hallmarked Edinburgh 1910.

I'm disappointed that no-one has come forward to say, "My Granny had one of those!" Or, even better, "And I've got it now." Descended from a teacher of a couple of generations ago? Rummage in those old boxes and you'll probably find one.
