This picture stimulated me to post this Stromness equivalent. There was another board following this one - maybe someone will have a pic of it - but the invidious practice of celebrating scholastic achievement in this way didn't persist for many more years you will be relieved to hear.

Very interesting - the first entry on this board is my uncle - John Gibson who taught at Peebles High School for many years.

I have a silver dux medal " The Mowat Medal" That was awarded to my father for attendance at the Holm West School from 1939-1947. Was this also on a board? I will post a picture.

Thelma Jemima Stuart Adamson(Marwick House) was my first cousin once removed, as we share William Adamson(1854-1936). Interesting to find her name on the Stromness Academy Dux Medallists board dated 1940, as I have her date of birth as 08 Oct 1920. This would have made her 19 when she became Dux!

Girls outnumber boys almost two-to-one (22-12) on this board, whereas in Kirkwall (#23381) the inky swots are evenly split between the sexes. Does this mean anything?

Having had no response to my not entirely rhetorical question above, I'm forced to the unpalatable conclusion that Stromness boys of my generation were, on average, thicker than Kirkwall boys.
Oh gawd! Did I really say that? What I mean is, they weren't drawn to academic subjects, and were more inclined to see the rest of us as the jessies we may well have been.
