Butterfly I found in the garage on the 18th April 2009
Picture added on 21 December 2009 at 12:37
I've just noticed your photo has attracted no comments, Graham. Sydney Gauld would be your man for a reliable opinion but, him lacking, I'll say that this Peacock butterfly is an immigrant from south and is pretty near the northernmost limit of its range. It isn't often seen here. It must have overwintered somewhere - perhaps in your garage? The hindwings are slightly tattered near the eyespots, but it's in pretty good shape overall. It would be great to see some more of these gorgeous insects in Orkney this summer, assuming there is one. (I must say your garage is beautifully veneered compared with mine.)
