Thanks, everyone! I've had a look at it on Google Earth: there's a feature in the background of my photo which looks like a curved breakwater that had me puzzled, it turns out to be rocks. (Google Earth coverage of Orkney is much better than it used to be, though Kirkwall is still under ten tenths cloud).
