I wonder if anyone can put any names to this Tom Kent photo of the minister and office bearers of the King Street kirk in 1929. My great grandfather, John Johnston is in the second row, third from right, and the Rev Sutherland is at the front, but no other names are known.

Danny, I think the John Johnston you refer to is the same John Johnston in the photo I submitted- picture #15894

The man 2nd from right in front row looks like Robert Grieve Harrold. See picture #2614. He was an elder of the King St church from 1920 til 1943.

This was probably taken to mark the end of King Street's existence as a U.F. Church. Just over three weeks later, on 1st October 1929, it became the King Street Congregation of the Church of Scotland, when the United Free Church united nationally with the Established Church of Scotland. Some U.F. people refused to join the new church and continued as an independent body which still has a number of congregations today. There is one in Dounby for example.

Second row, fifth from the left, my Grandfather James Groundwater, of J. F. Groundwater, bakers and grocers. I remember that he was an elder in the fifties.

I am wondering if the gentleman seated third from the right in the front row is James F. Groundwater.

I am wondering if the gentleman seated third from the right in the front row is James F. Groundwater. I have a couple of other photographs of him and there is a similarity. He was an elder for a time.
