A little over nine years on from picture #2942 and this time the crowd assembled at the Cross is told that it has pleased Almighty God to call to His mercy our late Sovereign Lord King Edward. George V is then proclaimed King. I've not looked up the newspaper report, but it looks like Sheriff Harvey making the proclamation. The figure in chain of office will be Provost James Slater. Junior Bailie W. B. Baikie is standing one step down on the left. In between him and the Sheriff looks like Senior Bailie Robert Garden. No doubt several of the other Town Councillors are gathered around. The school children are lined up on front to see history made, and their teachers' hats are the height (and width) of fashion. A Tom Kent photo from the Orkney Library Photographic Archive.
