Yes, there used to be a Kirkwall Air Show, organised by the Rotary Club (I think), in September. In 1982 the Red Arrows came, and were spectacular. This is at Grimsetter.

I remember it well, was there not two airshows!? I remember the big radio controlled Viscount model, what a noise with all four engines running. Also a biplane model with snoopy as pilot but alas it came down to earth with a bang!
Funny what you can remember!
There was also a few old aircraft passing from an airshow at Sumburgh one other time, a pink Spitfire being one, we rushed out to see them as the spit did a low pass over Kirkwall they landed for fuel.

The model a/c that flew that day was a Boeing 747, Snoopy "died" as a result of radio interference, the pink a/c was a Spitfire, red not pink with the registration G-FIRE, flown by a BA pilot called Roger Hendry.

I have found my programme for the Air Show, Sunday 5th Sept 1982. Apart from the local aircraft taking part the others listed were Jaguar 226 OCU (RAF), F111 Tactical strike aircraft (USAF), HC-130 Hercules (USAF), HH-53 Super Jolly (USAF) Beach UC12B (US Navy) others listed as visiting were Nimrod, Sea King , Bolkow 105, a Shackleton and of course the Red Arrows. To my knowledge this was the first time the Red Arrows performed a display in Orkney. The event was organised by Orkney Round Table in association with Orkney Flying Club.
