Long Haired Lover From Broadsands Road

This is a picture of my dad Gary Miller in 1966 who lived in Broadsands Road next door to Mr & Mrs McBeth. He was one of the first teenage lads in Orkney to have long hair and ran a record shop in my Granddad Willie Miller & his brother Jack Miller's petrol station in Kiln Corner, Kirkwall, called J T Millers.

Serious comment ...it was THE record shop when Gary was there he had all the cool top twenty hits of the day .. singles, EP's and LP's ...can picture it no problem, the big desk, the racks of records, faded wallpaper, spent many a shilling in there on Cliff Richard, The Shadows, The Byrds (Mr Tambourine Man), still have a few of them. Gary was a trendy guy for his day in Orkney.

I remember the record department of J T Millers as late as 1976.

Wow! When I moved to Orkney in 1966,as a school kid, I sniffed out this amazing music outlet. For some bizarre reason, I was a collector of all things relating to record company release schedules, notably the Decca Music Group's "New Issues" booklets. No expense spared at that time on promotions. Gary at that time was the cool dude music store guy, later to be copied in stores like the much-missed Borders Group and Tower Records. Good to have this historical memory revived!

I remember Gary, when I was a school kid, after we moved to Orkney! The record store was a magnet for my weekly allowance, but there were always lots of freebies, relating to record companies. There were 2 older guys at the main desk, both balding, one of whom had a slightly nervous chuckle! First time I had seen a record shop within a petrol station.
