Scanned from a magazine from about 40 years ago. Taken from the Kirkwall Hotel, by the look of it. The same scene today would show a much busier and larger pier, which is not something that you would hace predicted at one time. Is that the old Sigurd or Thorfinn at the cross-berth?

Fishing boat in foreground is "Flowing Tide" but not sure of one in corner outside Harbour office. inside the 2 Norwegian whalers is the Dennison family's "Shapinsay" a converted drifter which at one time carried many thousands of eggs to Glasgow. Astern of her is one of Bremner's either Orkney "Trader" or "Finvoy" Sigurd is on cross berth and "Earl Thorfinn" on Amelia or Cooper's berth. White Cruise vessel on West side is the "Meteor" of Bergen Line which used to do National Trust cruises in late 50's early 60's.
I'd say this photo was about 1959/60 due to Bremner's having chartered the motorship "Karri" to replace the steamers by 1961 or 62. Also the "Orcadia" arrived in 62 and after being laid up in the basin Earl Thorfinn was sold in early 63.
