Looking down Bridge Street, Kirkwall

A Tom Kent picture, date unknown.

This picture is included to vindicate my claim with picture #909 that there was a water fountain at the end of what is now Eric Kemp's. There it is! In fact there seems to be two, with a more ornate 'Clay Loan' pattern one on the extreme left.

Looking down the street we see that where BES is now (formerly the Co-op furniture store) was Heddle's Lodgings, Sheila Fleet's was a barbers, Nicol Spence's was Nicol Spence's, and the much debated frontage of Garden's is present on the street, with s sign sticking out into the street, saying Garden's, reasonably enough.

Bring back these sticky-ooty signs- it'll distract the tourists from the uPVC windows (which I have nothing against)...

Comments:
Yes, bring back the sticky-ooty signs. Better than those swinging things placed on the pavements to trip folk up as they meander along! Notice how smooth and even the paving slabs are in these old pics - they were never meant to put up with heavy motorised traffic like today.

Norman shearer if you are out there. This picture is the answer to your request for a photo of bridge street hairdressers.
I would advise your contacting orkney communities for further information
