A Tom Kent picture, date unknown.
The picture shows a tennis court marked out in the gardens of Tankerness House.
Picture added on 21 June 2005
After viewing the tennis court photos I'm sure there were many more courts throughout Orkney, this was obviously a very popular sport in the earlier part of the last century. When and why did this die out? as I'm not aware of any tennis played in Orkney now.

The gardens of Tankerness House were re-landscaped by William Dover Baikie (born Cowan), 10th Laird. The house featured in Country Life Magazine in 1898, mentioning the tennis lawn and the kitchen garden. Dover Baikie died before it was published - he was 48 years old.
