Comments:
I am absolutely NOT sure about what it is in the Orcadian/Scottish context! ... the more that we can't see what was actually in the box.
When I first came across the term of 'Mayday Breeders Kit Boxes' it happened in the SW USA (South Carolina or so). That were boxes which contained emergency kits to rescue winning but somehow surviving and badly wounded champions of dog fights.
From that I could imagine within the Orcadian/Scottish context that it was a box containing basical vet's equipment which was probably kept on bigger farms for any case of an unforseeable emergency.
It's a guess, no proof for it!!!

Assuming AI stands for artificial insemination, I think the use will probably be more specific than that...

This maybe a complete red herring, but there could be some merit in the fighting dog theory. There is a line of Pit Bull terriers decending from the great fighting champion known as GR.CH.Mayday. There are references to the breed and breeders kits etc., on a website I've Just found through Ask Jeeves (There wasn't much on Google).

Secondly it maybe an artificial insemination kit which has to be used on the 1st May, or else?

I must have a very innocent mind, because I read A.I. and thought "Artificial Intelligence"!
