The pic shows Lyness from a german aerial photo. Most interesting is seeing Cava and Fara under cultivation.

It was one taken to prepare for the air raid on the "Iron Duke", in those days at anchor in Weddel Sound (half way between Fara and today's Rinigill pier). The Iron Duke was attacked on 17th October, 1939.
Explanation according to: Chronik des Seekrieges 1939-1945, ed. by Bibliothek für Zeitgeschichte, Württembergische Landesbibliothek, Stuttgart 2007
1. light cruiser, probably "Arethusa"-Class, 5200 ts.
2. 1 tanker, about 8000 BRT, next to it a gun boat, about 1200 ts.
3. 5 little steamers (supply boats)
4. 2 boom prams next to a steamer
5. WW I battle cruiser "Derfflinger", capsized, with salvage boats
6. probably a bigger supply steamer loading to smaller supply boats
7. cruise ship (used for additional quarters or as an attached auxilliary)
8. tanker
a. anti aircraft battery
b. tanks
c. barracks
