Oldest Bridge Street yet

An even older photo than picture #3727 and worth comparing. This is a print from the Photographic Archive at the Orkney Library. On the left where the betting shop is now stands the old houses of Craigie's close demolished in 1882. On the right, nearest the camera, the present Frozen Food shop, formerly Maxwell's, has not been built. The sign says something Provision Stores. Anyone know what the boy is leaning against? The next building looks quite new. But most interesting of all is The Gallery where the two wings next the street are lower than in later photos and there is a railing between them. Presumably they were heightened when the building was the Kirkwall Hotel. I wonder if the main part of the building (out of sight here), which latterly was four storeys high, was also heightened at the same time? Date estimated.

Comments:
Sorry but if the date is 1875 then the building on the right must be Maxwell's since the Valuation roll for 1864/65 lists John Maxwell as having his house in Bridge St Lane and his shop and stores in Bridge St. There is a close where the barrel is and then the shop which became Robert Miller's Watchmaker's shop in 1887 and D. Sinclair's watchmaker in 1901 and later in the 20th Century Sinclair's record shop. The next shop then is Nicol Spence's founded 1867.
