As the present is the future of history, here is a recent picture (OK, December 2003) of some original Ba' Humbugs.
In October or November of 2003, while I was working at Orkney Enterprise, the idea of the Ba' Humbug came to me, reasoning that as Dennis Bichan had just acquired a boiled sweetie business this was a brilliant opportunity for him to produce black and brown striped humbugs and market them as (tada!) Ba' Humbugs.
I duly emailed this idea to Dennis, and thought no more about it until I was shouted down to reception a month or so later, where Dennis presented me with the boxes above, having picked up the idea and run with it.
Sadly this is as far as my royalties have gone. Maybe I should go back to the original concept and market them as 'Heddle's Original Ba Humbugs'...

An English shop has just opened in the small village of Crépy-en-Valois, where I live in France. Naturally I had to go and see what was on sale – Beans, Lime cordial, ham cubes, tea bags of all sorts, chutney, sandwich spread, crunchies flakes, syrup, treacle etc. It is great to be able to find all the things you miss on ones door step after 32 years of dotting back and fore on the ferry to Dover! I became quite friendly with this girl but she didn’t know where I came from and I still don’t know where she comes from. While hunting around the shop to see what I could find, my eyes widened and there amongst sherbet dabs I found one bar of Orkney fudge. I gave out a cry of delight and grabbed it before the kids in front of me could have it! Thank goodness she is getting more in. Fudge from Orkney goes down very well here so when will I find on her shelf, the Ba’ humbugs please?
