Frontage of Phoenix, looking up the Back Road

Kenny writes:
'Photo of The Phoenix taken from the junction with Union Street. (1960's)'

Controversially I've put the date as 1955, since it looks like it might have been taken at the same time as the earlier picture of the painter adding finishing touches - Steven

Comments:
If the date 1955 is correct - were you to walk around the corner of the Phoenix picture house and look towards the "peedie sea" you would be able to see the local Slaughter House. If you were to walk down the Back Road about 20 yards past the Phoenix picture house, you would come across a T Junction. The turn off to the left takes one out past the Crafty and the Peddie Sea. The road eventually links up with the Kirkwall - Finston - Stromness Road. If you travel straight down the Back Road, you will eventually end up at the Kirkwall Harbour. Sadly - the T Junction has now been replaced by what I can only describe as a "Magic Roundabout". The logic that lies behind it's being put there eludes me.
