Otters Crossing

A sign on Pickaquoy Road. Photo taken many years (18?) after metrication. Has anyone ever seen an otter actually crossing this road?

My dad complained for years that "you never see an otter on that road. Waste of money." Then he came back one night amazed as he'd spent the best part of half an hour watching an otter in the Peedie Sea... and then it ran across the road! He says he'll never moan about it again.

I'm afraid I can vouch for the presence of otters on the Ayre Road, as I unfortunately ran one over in March 2007 at around 3am one morning on the way home from work. Before this I was sceptical about them, like many others in Orkney I suspect.

I have seen an otter crossing at night - only once and a good few years ago now

So funny you should mention this, I had a friend up from Glasgow who took a photo of the sign as it was the funniest thing he had ever seen - especially when I told him that I didn't think and otter had ever been seen!

I saw an otter last Wednesday morning about 9.45am. I was at the bus stop in front of the Glaitness School and it was slowly making its way to the built up part of the road across from me. The reason I looked where it was was because the birds were going berserk. Not a duck or gull on the Peedie Sea.

PS I bought an SLR camera on Saturday. I understand the otter was captured and tagged shortly after.
