Orkney's first modern phone

The first modern telephone in Orkney.

This telephone was installed in the Kirkwall Hotel for the queens visit in 1959. All these telephone have a manufacture date on the base and I have checked and it is 1959. It is not recorded if she phoned home on it but it was subsequently ' rescued ' by a GPO engineer and was in his house until his death. It now lives in the BT museum in Kirkwall.

Comments:
My grannie and grandad in Rousay had a black and green beckalite phone away back in the 1950's and I thought it was right posh. The shared line wasn't so good!
